Library in Baden, Switzerland

The refurbishment of this library in a former monastery was complemented by a small entrance extension in the form of a delicate glass cube. The three columns supporting the roof are set in the middle of the free faces of the cube. Steel cables are used to brace the structure and to support the lightweight staircase, which is suspended from the roof. The large areas of glazing are fixed with adhesive to the steel structure. The situation was artistically enhanced by a collaboration with Max Matter. The letters of the alphabet as drawn by Albrecht Dürer were cut into the stone paving outside the entrance – a symbol, so to speak, of the works stored inside the building. The stelae consist of 66 stone slabs stacked like books.
