Living à la Mrs. Fan: Plugin House by People’s Architecture Office

Mrs. Fan comes from a traditional Chinese family from the Changchun Jie hutong in the historical centre of Beijing. She wanted to move back, but the exorbitant real-estate prices made this impossible. A different solution was needed: Plugin House by People’s Architecture Office presents an adaptable, inexpensive alternative that enables people to live in the old neighbourhoods of Beijing.

The bespoke house, built primarily of prefab panels, consists of two tiered volumes and a series of sloping roof surfaces that neither block the sunlight nor obstruct the neighbours’ views. A simple plug-in system that can be assembled in a day holds the waterproof, insulated structure together. The interior is home to a living area, a small kitchen and a bathroom. Windows at ceiling height flood the house with daylight.

The concept behind Plugin House arose from the original idea to protect the hutongs - narrow, traditional alleys found in northern China - from the urban transformation currently underway in the city centre.
