There have never been so many building materials to choose from, nor were so many different ways available to process their surfaces. Back in the days of postmodernism, the prevailing aesthetics and architectural theory led to a collage of all sorts of materials. But more recently, the mix of materials was the result of the increased demands on building physics, which could no longer be met by a single building material. Multi-layer assemblies and composite materials appeared to be the only appropriate response to what are often complex requirements.
