Memento Mori: Architectural Drawing Prize 2017

A new prize for architectural drawing has been called into life by the World Architecture festival in conjunction with Sir John Soane’s Museum and Make Architects. Altogether, there are three categories: hand-done or digitally prepared drawings and pictures in mixed techniques may be submitted. Jerome Xin Hao Ng’s drawing Memento Mori: A Peckham Hospice Care Home won the main prize in the mixed-techniques category. Ng, a student at the Bartlett School of Architecture, prepared the drawing within the framework of his final project. The jury praised his “outstandingly conceptualized and executed” drawing for its technical perfection and sensitivity in working with the portrayed space.

In the two other categories, the jury chose Christopher Wijatno’s digital picture Deepwater Purgatory and the hand-done drawing Scenarios for a Post-Crisis Landscape by Dimitrios Grozopoulis. Wijatno’s drawing portrays a prison that, like an oil platform, stands in deep water. Grozopoulis’ atmospheric drawing features extremely precise lines and calls to mind apocalyptic, post-industrial landscapes. In addition to the three winners, the jury prepared a short list of 38 further submissions by architects and designers representing 15 different countries in all parts of the world.

The selected drawings will be exhibited from 15 – 17 November 2017 in Berlin and then from 21 February until 14 April 2018 at Sir John Soane’s Museum in London.
