Memorial to refugees: Ai Weiwei takes a stand in Berlin

Ai Weiwei has now made a similar gesture on the outside of the Berlin Concert Hall in an effort to draw attention to the refugee 'drama'. To highlight the continuing suffering of the desperate people seeking refuge in Europe, he tied 14,000 orange-coloured life jackets around the Concert Hall pillars and hung an inflatable boat marked with the words #SafePassage in the middle of the installation. The life jackets were brought to Berlin from the Greek island of Lesvos and had been discarded by refugees who made it safely over the sea. The installation was realised in conjunction with the Cinema for Peace gala, which took place at the Berlin Concert Hall in mid-February.
