Located in Nicolás Bravo, a small town on the Yucatán Peninsula, the architectural firm has created a vibrant market that transcends the mere function of a retail space. Commissioned by Mexico's SEDATU, the building meets the needs of the local population while catering for growing tourism numbers. As well as selling fresh food, regional cuisine and handicrafts, the market also serves as a cultural centre for the town's 5,500 inhabitants.

Between tradition and innovation
Architects Rolando Rodríguez-Leal and Natalia Wrzask opted for a robust, low-maintenance construction method. They used a lightweight steel structure and pigmented concrete elements, as well as coloured concrete blocks and clay tiles, to clad the roof and floor. The building combines traditional materials with a contemporary design language, demonstrating how modern architecture can respect and reinterpret local building methods.

A structure with system and soul
The 7,700 m² market, which has 50 stalls, is clearly and functionally organised on an 8 × 8 m grid. Its roof structure consists of a series of inverted concrete screens known as hyperbolic paraboloids. These provide light and ventilation, and give the market a striking architectural expression. Two green inner courtyards break through the roof, allowing additional light and air into the interior.

Architecture as a social tool
The Mercado Nicolás Bravo is a prime example of how architecture can actively support social processes. The project strengthens local identity, creates economic opportunities and fosters community connections through shared spaces. Thanks to its clear design and sustainable construction, the market blends harmoniously into the landscape, setting an example for integrative urban development in rural areas.
