METI School in Rudrapur, Bangladesh - Analogue Construction Using Local Resources

Low costs, the use of local resources and innovative construction techniques have combined to produce an exemplary school in Rudrapur, Bangladesh. This six room school house was constructed of earth and bamboo; avoiding the implementation of imported constructional or technical complexities. The final constructional costs are approximately 50% lower than comparable buildings of brick, concrete or steel construction. In addition to a clear architectural language, the school is remarkable for an all-round educational philosophy, which is exceptionally modern by local standards. This building demonstrates that sustainable, socially and environmentally responsible architectural projects must not necessarily be associated with exorbitant construction costs.
