Miami Beach aims to continue what is becoming a tradition of building interesting parking structures. Zaha Hadid has unveiled images for an elongated spiral of a building at Collins Park in the city. The building is a sinuous parking surface that winds-up over some 5 levels to create a sculptural building with a central atrium.
Other interesting carparks in Miami include Herzog & de Meuron’s car park/event venue at 1111 Lincoln Road and Enrique Norten's garage at 420 Lincoln Road. The innovative mixing of carparking with other programmes is not new. A friend from the Universidad Simon Bolivar has made me aware of the El Helicoide of Caracas, Venezuela from the 1950s where it was intended people would drive round the building to shop without leaving their cars. A paper by José Rosas and Iván Gonzáles explores the Helicoide in further detail.
