Mobile Art

The works of the artist Joep van Lieshout occupy the ground between art, design and architecture. Emphasis is placed not on functional constraints, but on a sensuous, sometimes disconcerting, experience of space. For example, boldly coloured polyester surfaces and fur-lined sleeping cells, reminiscent of a brothel, represent a parody of Dutch caravan culture. The project for the Kröller Müller Museum exploits the classical division between served and serving spaces. “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” is a mobile techno-space docked to a semi-stationary cabin; while the “Autocrat” self-catering unit embodies a dream of complete independence. By folding out its walls, the caravan is opened to the external space in a most surprising manner.
