Moved: The Bauhaus Archive to open its doors at Haus Hardenberg

In 1979, the Bauhaus Archive / Museum of Design moved into a building designed by Walter Gropius on Klingelhöferstrasse in Berlin. However, this building had come to require renovation work and no longer had the capacity to accommodate the world’s largest collection devoted to the Bauhaus. This is why the headquarters of the internationally renowned institution is currently undergoing restoration and expansion work carried out by Staab Architekten.

During the construction phase, the institution known as the temporary bauhaus archive / museum of design is moving to a provisional home at Haus Hardenberg in Berlin-Charlottenburg. The new format, slated for opening on 30 June 2018 will give visitors some insight into history. Historical photos and documents will shed light on the beginnings of the institution and the creation of the head office on Klingelhöferstrasse. Plans for the expansion will show how the institution has developed over time. The temporary bauhaus archive / museum of design will also serve as an information centre with respect to next year’s Bauhaus centennial.

Until the reopening of the location on Klingelhöferstrasse, the archive will thematize one Bauhaus-related topic every year. This year at Haus Hardenberg, the exhibition will focus on the Bauhaus collection. Next year, visitors will be able to learn about the former school. In 2020, the format will be devoted to architecture, followed by the topic of design in the final year.

The Lange Nacht der Museen [Long Night of the Museums], which will take place in Berlin on 25 August 2018, will kick off an accompanying program of events (see the link).
