Moving up: Beam cottage by Re-Format.

roof perspective

We all want some headroom to grow and develop! When asked to extend a rather dreary brick bungalow, Re-Format designed a sort of thinking hat - an architectural manifestation of a liberating space to live and work that gives form to its owner's dreams and desires. The extension creates a naturally lit weaving studio but with the spectacular treetop views of the garden and beyond, it is bound inspire new visions too. The project, from 2010, is a convincing example of how, with thought, a simple extension can be the catalyst for a more penetrating view of domestic architecture. The extension is largely clad in timber, and sits over the brick base of the old cottage. It has large opening glazing at first floor level that seems to admit the very spirit of the garden. To the rear, an enclosed cantilevering stair gives a curved timber protrusion – almost a sculptural vestige from an old giant tree!
