Networking: Knotted Sculpture by Janet Echelman

Janet Echelman’s installation, which hangs far above Rose Kennedy Greenway Park, is called »As If It Were Already Here«. The light, airy, colourful net is illuminated by night. Made of hand-knotted polyethylene fibres, it weighs more than a tonne. Creating the net required over half a million knots and more than 160 kilometres of line. During the day, the huge net casts interesting shadows over the public park below.

Echelman, who originally worked with paint, started making net sculptures after visiting India and learning this knotting technique from local fishers. Since then, she has been entangling people around the world in her larger-than-life installations.
