New edition: Ulm Stool in bright colours

The colours were chosen in collaboration with Max Bill's son Jakob for the new edition of the equally plain and functional so-called Ulm Stool, now being placed on the market by the Swiss label wb form. The multi-purpose furniture item goes back to a sketch on a paper serviette and was initially produced by Max Bill, first director of the Ulm School of Design, and his colleague Hans Gugelot, in 1954. Necessity was the mother of invention as far as the Ulm School was concerned: cash was in short supply at the school and the students had hardly anything to sit on, let alone other pieces of furniture to use. In keeping with Max Bill's general approach, the stool was designed solely in line with functional considerations and ended up acting not only as something to sit on but also as a side table or means of transporting documents and books. To this day it is to be found in public areas, as in museums, galleries, stores, offices, hotels and schools, and also in private homes.   Originally available only in spruce, the Ulm Stool can now also be had in a walnut version and in the six above-mentioned colours, making it no longer quite as plain as it once was but as functional as ever. The classic furniture item is produced in Switzerland at the disability workshop run by the Brändi Foundation of Lucerne.
