New Function for Former Steel Yard
A disused industrial area in Esch-sur-Alzette in Luxembourg has been turned into an attractive space for public use by AllesWirdGut.
Abandoned by the steel industry and populated with pioneer vegetation like mosses and birches, the grounds evoked a sense of space and roughness. The original character of the site is still alive in the contemporary design, which is a very sensitive reinterpretation of the rectangular plot. Materials capable of ageing like concrete, wood and untreated steel were combined with a programme compatible with industrial construction. Emptiness alternates with seating facilities, stairs and greenery. The materials used specifically allow the patina of the past to return. A special feature of the concept: the space grows together with the surrounding area.
The project has won the 'Bauhärepräis' (recognising the best projects in architecture) in the 'Espaces Paysages' (Space and Landscape Design) category. AllesWirdGut Architekten from Vienna and the local site developers AGORA received the prize awarded by the OAI (Order of Architects and Consulting Engineers) in Luxembourg on 26 June 2012.
