The concept of perpetual motion remains a perpetual source of fascination – this rocking chair is another reminder of this fact.
The self-driven rocking chair was developed by Novague, a design studio based in Prague. Novague's philosophy revolves around the concept of energy. The aim was to design a frequently used object that is able to generate energy as a side product when used.
The result was a rocking chair that combines the process of relaxation with the process of energy generation. A simple mechanism fitted under the chair sets a flywheel in motion as soon as someone starts to rock the chair.
The chair was a finalist of the Green Gadgets competition in 2009. After two years of further development, the chair is now a fully functional product with an energy-producing mechanism for supplying an LED lamp or for recharging an iPod. Series production is scheduled for December.
