OMA’s Schatkamer

Schatkamers by OMA / Rem Koolhaas, NAi, Rotterdam 2011

The Treasury, a new subterranean exhibition space of the NAi, designed by OMA / Rem Koolhaas, is now open to the public. The Schatkamer (The Treasury) is located in the level below the existing main exhibition spaces of the Netherlands Architecture Institute (NAi) in Rotterdam - in a room that was previously inaccessible to the public.

In the new 250 m2 (2.691 S.F.) space are displayed 100 of the highly prized possessions from the NAi’s extensive archive of Dutch architects, including work by Pierre Cuypers, Willem Dudok, Gerrit Rietveld, Hendrik Berlage and by Rem Koolhaas himself.

On display are for example models of Rietveld’s Zig-Zag chair, Berlage’s sketchbook from his travel to Italy in 1900 or Koolhaas’ studies for the Kunsthal. The objects were curated according to six themes referring to Dutch architectural traditions like for example approaching social housing through cooperation between government, private housing corporations and architects or like the pursuit of innovation in architecture.

To exhibit those objects the Schatkamer was organized in two display systems – a circular central area for group display and area with individual booths at the perimeter of the space.  Translucent curtains hanging in stripes from the ceiling separate the objects and display areas from each other.

Thereby the visitor is provided with a combination of intimate and overall views of the collection and with open space in-between that is free of information, but still provides a sense of the presence of the objects.
