The Architecture Foundation in London is hosting an exhibition titled “Tangling” by the young Japanese architect Akihila Hirata. In celebration I thought to explore two of his projects in today's posts. The Bloomberg pavilion, is the subject of this post. The second is considers the speculative project “Architecture farm”.
The pavilion could be described as a triangular enclosure with a folded sky. I say this as one of Hirata's earlier un-built projects “pleated Sky” worked a similar theme but its roof was open in a soft curving flowery form.
Although it is only a pavilion, and in that sense its functional requirements are limited, it contains the key lines of enquiry demonstrating how the architect might evolve the ideas into a more substantial building with complex functional requirements.
Akihila Hirata has just won the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale for his Japanese pavilion where his views on the possibilities of architecture were beautifully illustrated.
