Pleasing possibilities: Ecological demo house Quebeck, Canada by Gervais Fortin with the Ecologia Foundation.

With an enthusiastic owner, keen to commission a healthy house that would help her to reduce her ecological footprint, things previously out of reach become possible. This is the first house in Quebec aiming for a Platinum LEED Certificate, but to get there, the design team have not had to sacrifice the quality of the spaces they have created. Slightly more off-piste its creators claim: “Ecologia Montréal is the first house in Quebec to integrate the BioGeometry ™ science, to control electromagnetic fields, to consider the energy of the earth and to infuse domestic water, in a vortex which enhances biophotons. The combination of all these factors, harmonize the emotional, vital and spiritual levels of the home and of its occupants.” Setting aside the biophotons, a subject on which I know very little, there is really a lot in this house worth considering. Above all it demonstrates that with sufficient attention to the small details, such as the provenance of materials, for example the bath is made from a highly sustainable resin, and many other materials have a large recycled component, a highly significant impact can be made on the ecological performance of a building. It is really about changing the mind set that effects the way a multitude of everyday building tasks are done.
