Production Hall in Maranello

Ferrari’s new motor hall, an open structure with strong visual links between inside and outside, forms part of an overall concept in which spatial relationships are more important than spectacular individual structures. The facades of all the buildings are clad with aluminium panels, which ensure a uniformly elegant appearance. The spaces within the hall are distinguished by their functional, economic design and simple detailing, which result in a bright, unpretentious working environment. Unusual for Italy are the double-skin facades, the heat-recovery system, and the use of recycled aluminium and steel as an expression of sustainability. To minimize the overall volume, the architects decided against north-light roofs. Two-layer roof lights provide the requisite diffuse lighting conditions. The high degree of transparency of the hall made it necessary to avoid direct sunlight on the machinery. Movable blinds on the east face, fixed horizontal strips on the south face and the location of the service spaces along the west face all serve to prevent overheating.
