Rare early American map found in Germany

A copy of a rare 16th century map made by Martin Waldseemuller has been found in the pages of an old and unrelated book in Germany. It is though to be the first document to show America, then newly discovered. The map has become known as “the birth certificate of America” and is only the fifth example to be discovered. Printed in black ink on, now yellowing, paper. It is being researched at Munich's Ludwig Maximilian University by Sven Kuttner, head of old books. A larger versions of the map is already kept in the Library of Congress in Washington DC a gift by German Chancellor Angela Merkel to mark 500 years since the naming of America. The map has been made available online to mark American Independence Day. More information available on the BBC.
