Reopening of the Kammerspiele Theatre in Munich

The interior of this Art Nouveau theatre, erected by Max Littmann in 1901, was designed by Richard Riemerschmied and has now been restored with its original bold coloration. Concealed beneath the fine stucco ornament of this intimate, 722-seat house arestate-of-the-art mechanical services and stage technology. A modern ventilation system has also been installed. New structural measures included underpinning the foundations and strengthening the walls and floors. The fly tower has been raised in height by roughly eight metres and the scenery hall rebuilt. One of the most impressive spaces is the painting studio. Unfortunately, theatres are a bit like icebergs: the audience sees only a fraction of the whole – in this case, little more than 10 per cent of the entire complex.
