Scaling new heights at the Timber Expo

As part of the UK’s largest construction industry event, UK Construction Week (UKCW), architects, designers and specifiers still have the opportunity to secure a ticket to discovery at Birmingham’s NEC between 9 – 11 October.

Stunning case studies

See how timber is taking constructions to new heights through a delightful selection of case studies and real-life constructions.

•    Be inspired by the unique housing designs drawing on the beauty and performance of wood, including Knox Bhavan’s Lake District National Park home that’s just as stunning as the views.

•    See how award-winning MawsonKerr Architects composed a building of warmth, durability, acoustics and health for children with special needs, at the Sunbeam Music Centre.

•    Build your thirst for the evening by listening to Rogers Stirk Harbour & Partners and Arup explain how they brought a complex architectural design to life for one of the world’s leading luxury single malts, at the Macallan Distillery.

•    Get up close to Carwyn Lloyd Jones’ Timber Expo challenge, a tiny timber frame home, built using only natural materials such as hempcrete and cob wailing. And then visit 2NDState and the Royal College of Art’s sculpture that is being transported and rebuilt from Grymsdyke Farm.

A trail of innovation

As a material that never goes out of fashion, timber features heavily in the ‘Future of Construction’ theme, that sees an Innovation Trail uncover pioneering ideas, products and solutions. Exhibitors include Gripsure, which is launching two new products at the show: Gripsure Ecodek and Gripsure made with Accoya; Timber Structures showcasing its TS3 timber bonding technology range; and Trade Fabrication Systems, explaining its coated and laminated wood-based panel products to curious visitors.

Unmissable knowledge

Building quality and fire safety is an important topic for the whole construction supply chain. The Timber Focus Theatre, sponsored by TRADA, will guide architects and designers through the topics of design, fire doors and how tall we can build in wood before the UKCW Stage whittles down the larger issues including stopping building failures.

Speakers include Kevin Flanagan, partner at PLP Architecture; Daniel Kreissig, project manager, ZÜBLIN Timber; Robin Lancashire, senior timber frame consultant, TRADA; and Anthony Thistleton, co-founder and partner, Waugh Thistleton Architects.

In fact, timber features across the whole UKCW seminar programme. The Offsite Theatre is discussing timber element constructions and the housing crisis; the Regeneration Hub, sponsored by Easy-Trim, is considering where we can build more and self-build homes; and the Surface & Materials Hub is tackling diminishing resources, better buildings. Endless networking

With more than 35,000 visitors, 650 exhibitors and 350 speakers, networking opportunities are significant at this year’s show. Exhibitors include Capital Holz100, discussing its healthy living spaces entirely made from wood with no glue or harmful chemicals used in production. Cellecta will be showcasing its environmentally friendly acoustic and thermal insulation including ScreedBoard®. And Hanson Plywood will be displaying specialist panels which suit dry, humid and exterior use.

Opportunities to meet the entire timber supply chain will be easy at the Confederation of Timber Industries (CTI) Time for Timber CPD workshop programme delivered by the Structural Timber Association, Timber Trade Federation, Trussed Rafter Association, British Woodworking Federation and supported by the timber industry’s campaign, Wood for Good.

Finally, visitors can relax with a G&T at the Beer Festival’s gin and fizz bar, sponsored by Velux.
