School Sports Hall in Leipzig

The New Nikolai School in Leipzig, dating from the early 20th century, has been extended by a sports hall. The new structure occupies virtually the same volume as the former gymnasium destroyed in the war. With its specially developed strip-like rendering elements, the facade makes reference to the rustication of the existing school building. An unusual feature of the design is the use of rendering with a ventilated cavity to the rear. The lathing is formed by aluminium composite panels with a honeycomb core. Over the glazed areas of the facade, the rendering elements were designed as pivoting louvres.
