The public art exhibition "Seat", installed at the Fort Mason Center in San Francisco is displaying 35 original chairs by local designers and artists for the next year.
The exhibition is curated by Topher Delaney and Kika Probst of the multidisciplinary, San Francisco-based design practice Seam Studio in partnership with Fort Mason Center with the intention to draw more visitor into to park and to provide the Bay Area artist community with a public showroom for their art.
The artist were called to create a site specific seating object for Fort Mason Center is an urban 13-acre National Park on the coast of San Francisco and part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and loan it to the park for the time of the exhibition.
The requirement given to the artists was to create functional, weatherproof seating, which also works as a sculptural outdoor installation. The objects were to be responsive to the site’s heritage and to the extraordinary weather conditions of Fort Mason Center with lots of wind and rain depending on the season. They also had to be UV resistant, safe for children to climb on as well as comfortable for park visitors to sit upon and lean against.
Each artist built unique seating objects, many of which refer to nautical themes - from glistening metal benches to a bench called “eel” that heats up, when visitors come close.
