Sensual Experiences: Khora

Shigeru Uchida and Adrian Cheng designed five unique objects for the collection known as Khora. These are the last design objects by the well-known Japanese designer Uchida, who died in 2016 before the collection had been completed. Therefore, an exhibition of the furniture pieces at this year’s Salone in Milan served as homage to Uchida and his extraordinary career.

Three of Cheng and Uchida’s pieces shown in Milan were inspired by the breathtaking Japanese landscape. The highly developed artistry of Japan was applied to the complex construction of the exquisite objects. The exhibition also featured a portrayal of their creation, for instance the last meeting of the two designers in the tea pavilion designed by Uchida and a presentation of sketches and details accompanied by haiku, a traditional form of Japanese poetry. Adrian Cheng had this to say about the design of the seats: “With this collection, we explore the potential and the power of furniture, particularly the simple act of sitting.”
