Another former live stock shelter building in the Swiss Alps was transformed into a chalet - this time by Personeni Raffaele Schärer architects.The Swiss architecture office Personeni Raffaele Schärer transformed a former shelter building, located in the Val d’Herens, in the Herens district of the Swiss Alps, at an altitude of 1850 m, into a chalet.
It is a common and disputable trend in Switzerland to transform buildings that were formerly used as shelters for livestock in an alpine area into vacation residences: These reconstructions are on the one hand preserving these often well-crafted buildings. On the other hand, instead of maintaining the collective status of these shelters, they are transformed into individually used buildings – vacation homes or mountain cottages that are accessed by all-terrain cars from the city on a weekly bases and often altered in their form to accommodate a garage or outdoor spaces.
Consequently as the Swiss alpine areas are changed one shelter transformation by the next, the scenery of the mountains that attracted the new use in the first case becomes less natural and wild.
