Small Budget for Older Pupils

Because the architects had previously implemented a number of plans for the Graveney School, they were directly commissioned to develop a preliminary design for the new structure. In the process, they collaborated closely with teachers and pupils alike. By suggesting that the extension be placed on the rear part of the school grounds next to a listed existing building, it was possible to gain state funding, although this was subject to strict constraints in terms of cost efficiency and the construction period.
The goal was achieved using a large proportion of prefabricated timber-panel elements and an advantageous polycarbonate external skin, so that it was possible to complete the building in a construction period of only six weeks. Internally, the spaces are distinguished by timber surfaces left in a natural state. Together with visible mechanical services and the industrial character of the lighting, these lend the extension a raw, robust, individual identity.
For their final two years at school, the pupils have now gained eight new classrooms extending over an area of 800 m2 as well as a two-storey space with balconies, recesses and galleries for personal studies.
