Spatial Art for the Theatre - Observations on Architecture in Modern Stage Design

The determination of the importance of stage design within the structure of the arts has always led to confusing, albeit often productive, discussions. Although stage design in itself has relatively minimal autonomy within the whole process of stage production, it supports the performance and creates the spatial environment in which it takes place. Stage design can transcend the stage production, in the creation of new associations; or even further, influencing the total visual perception of the audience, thereby making possible in the first instance the uniqueness of theatre, the players and their text.
