Although I generally tend to go for the landscape format, as far as the presentation of the Alternative Car Park Towers by Mozhao is concerned, this is not an option – at least not for presenting the project as a whole…
Mozhao Studio won the Hong Kong Alternative Car Park Competition with this design: The tower attempts to integrate Hong Kong City Hall, the pedestrian system on the first floor and the street. Apart from the fact that the tower is primarily a car park, it also offers public spaces with atria and multifunctional areas on the uppermost floor, complete with great views of Victoria Harbour and Kowloon. This turns the parking facility into an urban landmark.
The parking spaces are located above the multifunctional area – in an 80-m-high outdoor atrium. The cars are transported by fully automatic lifts – which is probably just as well, because a longer ride in the tight spiral might leave one or the other driver feeling a little queasy.
Altogether a brilliant example of how a variety of different interests can be met within a limited space, while at the same time creating a new urban highlight.
