In China, despite the exploding use of motor cars, the bicycle remains the most popular means of transport! It is also one of the first ways children find they can travel around freely, so in this sense experience a kind of freedom of locomotion. Fertile ground then for the dissident artist Ai Weiwei to find expression in his art.
As part of his first exhibition at the Galleria Continua in the Tuscan town of San Gimignano, Italy, “Stacked” used 760 bicycles interconnected and stacked to create a labyrinthine structure that visitors can enter.
In 2011 Weiwei used bicycles for another installation titled “Forever Bicycles”.
Currently showing at the Galleria Continua, San Gimignano, Italy.
Stacked: an installation by Ai Weiwei.
