Staff Restaurant in Herzogenaurach

The barracks on this former military site have been converted into offices. These are complemented by a new restaurant – a flat, transparent pavilion set on a lake between pine trees. The roof structure comprises a powerful grid of main and secondary beams, which permit a free layout of the slender, inclined, hinged columns – echoing the motif of the trees. To avoid overheating through the glass roof, a ventilated, micro-perforated polycarbonate sunscreen membrane was inserted beneath the beam grid. Louvres in the facade, and air-intake elements in the floor allow the building to be ventilated to a large extent by natural means. An underground duct provides an energy-saving form of preheating or cooling the air supply.
