Staircase in Skara Cathedral

As part of the refurbishment work to the Swedish cathedral, a former coal cellar was converted into a choir room with natural lighting and ventilation and direct access from the cathedral square. The staircase enclosure is clad with stone and sandblasted steel sheeting. The stairs themselves consist of 10 mm welded steel plates with a grey rubber finish to the treads. The staircase hovers above the ground at its base and is clearly separated from the side wall: only every third riser is welded to a plate cast into the concrete structural wall. Bracing is provided by the framed steel balustrade, which is fixed to the wall at the top via the handrail. The safety-glass filling is held solely by the handrail.
