Street Furniture Made from Marine Plastic

Vestre’s Coast bench is made of hot-dip galvanized and powder-coated steel with seats made of plastic collected from Norwegian beaches. For the production of the seating, the manufacturer collaborates with Ogoori, a company that processes plastic waste recovered from the sea into a granulate and then bonds it into seating panels in various shades of blue.

Referencing the material’s former life, the seat designed by Vestre designer Allan Hagerup has a slight curvature reminiscent of the hull of a boat. The frame is designed in such a way that the slats can be easily replaced if necessary. Due to the variable quality of recycled plastics, this is necessary on a regular basis as the material wears out in the harsh environment. The bench currently exists only as a prototype, but Vestre hopes to launch it as a limited edition later this year once it has undergone a series of tests. Among other things, the toxicity of the material and its response to UV exposure will be evaluated.
