Sun as carving knife: a New York tower by Studio Gang.

Parks are vital in large cities. That reason alone is sufficient to compel any building adjacent to a park, not to overshadow it. Located between the High Line Park and the river Hudson, the site for the proposed tower is sensitive, in that a tall building occupying the usual footprint, would overshadow the park. The architect, Studio Gang, has therefore proposed a form that has been “carved” by the sun to create a tall building with sinuous curves, and an adventurous cantilever. It is not only that the building is sculptural in form, but the extra trouble of responding to the sun path in this way will give its occupants maximum light and better views of the river.
