Working outdoors in a wooded park, in the sun and close to the Mediterranean sea, sounds like many people's idea of a good job. That notion would not be challenged if you were called upon to work in the elegant architecture of this sophisticated hut in the Municipal Park in La Grand Motte city.
The use of timber for structure and cladding, in obvious reference to the trees of the forest, is the beginning point for NB Architecte's design. The site also has an urban context so the use of that material was thought to transcend this notional boundary. It was also an environmental decision.
The architects used a land contour to shape the plan, they also created what they term as a 'thick façade' as a way of protecting from direct sunlight . Much wider and the interstitial space between the glazing and the shading would have been habitable but as it is, gives better light quality to the interiors than a colonnade or wide canopy might.
