Tarkett Closes the Materials Cycle for Carpeting

The new method involves separating the two main components of a carpet − the yarn and the backing − so that the threads are preserved at a purity of 95%. Only at this level of purity is it possible to recycle Aquafil’s polyamide 6 (PA6-) yarn and later transform it into regenerated Econyl nylon yarn, which can be reprocessed. The backing can also be manufactured in an ecological way, meaning that a product approaching 100% sustainability can be produced. This system will enable the industry to meet the increasing demand for environment-friendly, sustainable materials. The recycling processes for backings and yarn take place without any loss of quality; used yarn becomes new yarn, and old backing material is recycled into new backing material.

Altogether, this method allows producers to aim at CO2 savings up to 84% higher than those seen in the traditional burning of materials. As Fabrice Barthélemy, CEO of Tarkett, explains: “Technological innovation has now made it possible to extend the life cycle of building materials.
