A few years ago the practice of separating old and new in renovation projects was normal – more often as a contrasting intrusion on restored structures offsetted by a very fine intersection and reserved arrangement. Since then the positions tend to vary, from the conservation of the patina at a specific point in time, like the New Museum in Berlin, to the attempt to reinstate the original conceptualised idea, or even completely experimental approaches.
