John Pawson is to convert the interiors of the iconic former Commonwealth Institute building in Kensington, London to create a new home for the Design Museum. The project will give the museum four times more space allowing it to become one of the great design institutions in the world, and to show much more of its collection.
The iconic building is grade II* heritage-listed and is considered one of the most important buildings of its age in London. It was was prevented from demolition by government intervention but has sadly stood empty for over a decade until a new appropriate use for it could be found. The museum is scheduled to open to the public in 2014. The project is also part of an associated residential development planned by OMA.
