The Principles of Compound Thermal-Insulation Systems. New Developments in the Light of Revised German Energy Regulations, 2009

On 1 October, the EnEV comes into force. For structural engineering this means a tightening of the energy efficiency by 30% and, subsequently, thicker insulation. This article gives a current overview of the fundamentals for thermal insulation and their components and shows how with new products for fixing material, special fettling and organic coatings, the negative effects of thermal insulation systems can be mitigated. A main focus is on insulation material such as foam sheets, wood-fibre sheets or phenolic rigid foam sheets, which, due to their different properties, offer the planner more room to manoeuvre when designing thermal insulation systems – more than one would expect.
