The Roof Is Dead. Long Live the Roof!

Alongside their primary protective function, roofs increasingly reveal new design aspects, and spatial and urban qualities. As areas for foot traffic and various activities, as sculptural volumes, as mega-structures and coverings to public spaces, they have acquired a new content. The difference between the facade and the roof is slowly eliminated. Structures with a universal character overcome the dialectic between load bearing and load imposition, masking the typology of a building and creating a state of ambivalence between function and material, between accentuation and its neutralization.
