I have come across many good architectural photographs, but far less frequently does a photo completely arrest my attention. When that has happened, I have found that often the photograph was taken by James Ewing. For this reason, I wanted to tribute James and his work so I have invited him to select a few of his favourite shots which are posted here.
I asked James what inspires him, and how he approached photography?
“Good architecture inspires me. You just can’t deny the optimism of the Empire State Building. Similarly, when you turn the corner on Astor Place and Morphosis Architects Cooper Union building reveals itself like a shimmering mirage—your heart just quickens. I hope that my photography can contribute to investment in good design.
I approach photography with a belief in the power of craft and collaboration. For me, that means an ability to engage viewers with a skilful attention to context; legibility of form, behaviour of light, composition, and very careful editing. I deeply value the conversations and insights that come with every new project.”
James Ewing is a New York-based photographer, artist and traveller. He shoots architecture, interiors and landscapes, with special interests in historic modern, adaptive reuse and experimental architecture.
