Toilet facility at Skjervsfossen waterfall: Design by Fortunen AS

To provide a public toilet facility at Skjervsfossen waterfall, the Norwegian architectural office Fortunen has designed a small building containing two toilets and a small technical equipment room; the respective commission for a landscape design concept went to Østengen & Bergo landscape architects. The intention in both cases was to avoid major interventions in providing access to the site.
The toilet facility, which is clad in natural stone and features a steeply slanted single-pitch roof, is located in the open landscape. Clearly referring to the adjacent mountains, it stands unperturbably at the riverside as if carved out of rock. The façade facing the water is clad in stainless steel, its two high windows reflecting the river and the woods behind the water. To underscore the building's monolithic effect, the three other facades are closed off. Even without an urgent need, it's worth taking a look into the stained plywood interior, which provides surprising views high up into the woods and down below onto the water rushing past the building.
