Transparent Centre Made of Solar Protection Glass

Architects Bond Bryan have created an illustrative example for the next generation of engineers at the University of Sheffield. In the course of their refurbishment of the Faculty of Engineering there, they designed the Engineering Heartspace, a glass-covered courtyard that connects two of the oldest buildings on the university premises and forms a new entrance to the Faculty from Portobello Street.

White tree-shaped steel columns support the approximately 1400 m2 large lattice shell made up of steel and triangular glass surfaces. It not only provides weather protection for the now well-frequented courtyard, but also improves the thermal protection of the old buildings as an additional thermal envelope.

The more than 900 triangular panes, screen-printed with a fine white dot pattern, were supplied by Austrian company Eckelt Glas. The panes are made of the solar protection glass Climaplus Cool-Lite Xtreme 50/22 II, which according to the manufacturer is characterised by its low light reflection. For the new entrance facade on Portobello Street, Glassolutions Objektcenter Radeburg used Saint-Gobain Cool-Lite Xtreme 60/28 II glazing. A total of 600 m2 of the highly selective solar protection glazing is installed on the glass front.
