UN City: United Nations head office, Copenhagen, by 3XN.
The United Nations Head office is an eight pointed star in plan. The idea is a literal interpretation of a building reaching out to all parts of the world. Its architects, 3XN, have evoked the notion of ships found in the harbour, a surprisingly enduring theme for architects, by creating a white building with prows apparently set to plough the waves.
The scheme was built in two phases and is set for completion later this year. It is designed to bring together the various UN regional offices into one powerful and iconic building. This is unmistakably architecture as authority, but not in the way history suggests authoritarian architecture should be. This building metaphorically strives to connect its agencies through the device of a strong naturally lit central atrium, and an elaborate stair that connects all levels.
The building has a strong environmental agenda and is expected to become one of Denmark's most sustainable buildings.
Despite the prows, we can be reasonably confident that the building will not go anywhere in the physical sense, but it is reputation is bound to travel.
Gratitude to e-architect.
