The great architectural educator Peter Cook ,of Archigram fame, shocked his students when he delivered a lecture at the Bartlett School of Architecture titled: Beyond The Vegetable. That was in 1994 and he was evidently fed-up with drawing buildings as vegetation and wanted to get back to the hard edge of architecture. I did not think it at the time, but I can say now, that he might have been a little too hasty or perhaps a little too ahead of his time!
Recently launched from Paris is a website for the Laboratory of Urban Agriculture or LUA for short. Here it seems that the vegetable is staging a fight-back.
LUA want to promote the idea and reality of urban allotment buildings and they see that the best way to do this is to create some kind of institute of the main players that will research problems associated with urban allotments, and make an effective lobby group for their promotion. The images provided appear to be from a single architectural practice, but nonetheless the questions raised are cogent enough.
