Entering a vertical landscape is always a thrilling experience whether it is a forest of tall, straight, trees or the breathtaking urban density of a high-rise city.

Here, the French graphic artist Romain Jacquet-Lagreze, moved by the intensity of his experience in Hong Kong, has created these images which are published in Vertical Horizon, his latest book.

The artist was apparently shocked by “the race to the sky” as he saw it, and in response, created these beautiful and thoughtful images.

Look closely, and the monolith of the massive city is revealed as a kind of shell or hard crust, concealing and containing, the people that inhabit the place. These observations are revealed in a myriad of tiny details: a cross of bunting, a reflection in glass, men on a scaffold.

Each image reminds us that people created these spaces for their own enjoyment.
