What looks like the shingle roof landscape of a prehistoric lake dwelling from afar, is in fact the new visitor centre for the Lancashire Wildlife Trust at Brockholes Nature Reserve.

The location in the flood area between river and motorway, calls for an unconventional approach: The complex is designed as a floating island.
A concrete pontoon permits the water level to rise by up to three metres. Four steel posts anchor the oak-clad ensemble.
The steeply pitched shingle roofs are a distinctive feature of the visitor centre.
