A hikers‘ tent designed by Utopia Arkitekter has the Islandic name Skýli. In English, this word means refuge. The mobile cabin was developed to be set up in the remote places along hiking trails. On the one hand, the structure resembles a classic tent as used around the world. On the other, it has a characteristic shape often seen in the roof construction of traditional Icelandic cabins.
The tent has two entrances directly opposite each other in order to provide better protection from the wind. The doors are located in the outer shell, which slopes inwards so that they automatically fall closed and stay closed. The space between the inner and outer shells serves as a place to dry clothing and as home to a composting toilet. The cabin can accommodate up to 15 people. In an emergency, the hikers have access to food and basic medical supplies. The energy generated by a solar panel integrated into the cabin is enough to illuminate the space and charge mobile telephones.
