Reflecting the proportions and form of the traditional timberframed houses of Wolfsburg, Stephan Braunfels has developed a contextual response for the Gifhorner Volksbank. The historical urban structure of the old town is characterised by narrow street frontage with a deep plan and narrow alleys between the houses connecting the public and private realms behind the building line.
Braunfels has rationalised the historic building and urban forms to their essential elements of gable, roof and alley. Two 'terraces' of building run at acute angles to each other with a glass rutunda between them that covers a 'marketplace' or atrium for the bank. The rutunda also marks the transition between the private and the public realm of the street.
