Wood and Glass in HafenCity Hamburg

Foto: Lumon

Roots, at 18 storeys, is set to be the tallest wooden high-rise in Germany, and is currently being built in Hamburg’s HafenCity. It will house 181 apartments and also include around 1700 m2 of office space and 2000 m2 of exhibition space. The building, scheduled for completion in 2023, will feature frameless balcony glazing and glass railings from Lumon. These harmonise visually with the wood, a natural building material, and ensure a long service life for the balcony constructions, which are partly exposed to extreme weather conditions. According to the manufacturer, the service life of a glazed balcony is 60 to 130 years, depending on the amount of maintenance.
