Wood and Glass in HafenCity Hamburg

Roots, at 18 storeys, is set to be the tallest wooden high-rise in Germany, and is currently being built in Hamburg’s HafenCity. ­It will house 181 apartments and also include around 1700 m² ­of office space and 2000 m² of exhibition space. The building, scheduled for completion in 2023, will feature frameless balcony glazing and glass railings from Lumon. These harmonise visually with the wood, a natural building material, and ensure ­a long service life for the balcony constructions, which are partly exposed to extreme weather ­conditions. According to the manufacturer, the service life ­of ­a glazed balcony is 60 to 130 years, depending on the amount of maintenance.
